Character and temperament
Havanese are decidedly social. They gladly accompany their family through everyday life and accept changing environments with remarkable calm.
They learn through friendliness and motivation; harsh corrections unsettle them. With positive reinforcement they become reliable companions in a café as well as on a hiking trail.
They only become vocal when boredom or insecurity is added — we prevent both during the imprinting phase.
Grooming and husbandry
- Without undercoat the silky hair mats more slowly, but still needs a thorough brushing session every other day.
- Many owners choose a practical puppy cut; show length is not required for a healthy dog's life.
- After walks in the rain, dry the belly and paws so no knots form.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Havanese like being left alone?
It is a companion dog and, after careful training, will stay alone for up to four hours. Full working days away do not suit this breed.
