Checklist for your puppy's arrival

Prepare your home

Move cables, plants and cleaning products out of reach
Set up two or three sleeping places, one in the bedroom
Lay non-slip rugs on smooth floors
Secure stairs with a child gate (especially for miniature dachshunds)

Basic equipment

Non-slip food and water bowls
The familiar puppy food for the first two weeks
Chest harness and light lead, plus a long line
Car crate sized for the adult dog
Brush, comb, nail clippers, mild dog toothpaste
Two or three chews and a snuffle mat

Admin

Choose a veterinary practice and book a first appointment
Take out third-party liability insurance for dogs
Register the dog with your municipality (dog tax)
Register the microchip with Tasso or Findefix
Look for a puppy class or dog school

Plan the first week

Take leave or work from home for at least a week
Keep visitors to a minimum
Plan nights anew: one or two toilet trips
Set fixed feeding times (four times a day)
