Character and temperament
The miniature dachshund was bred for independent work below ground. That autonomy still shapes its character: it enjoys cooperating, but thinks for itself first.
Scent work, tracking games and dummy searches keep it content. Pure on-lead strolls bore it.
In the family it is affectionate, alert and, with clear boundaries, highly reliable.
Grooming and husbandry
- Protect the back: no stairs in the first months, avoid jumps off the sofa, provide ramps.
- Keep strictly to the ideal weight — every extra gram strains the intervertebral discs.
- Check the ears weekly, as drop ears are less well ventilated.
