Vaccination schedule and microchipping: dates, deadlines and the EU pet passport

Vaccination and identification are the organisational part of puppy health. It is quickly done if the appointments are in the calendar from the start.
The vaccination calendar in the first year
Following the German StIKo Vet recommendation: week 8 DHPPi plus leptospirosis, week 12 booster plus rabies, week 16 a further booster, then the primary course completed at 15 months.
Our puppies leave the Lindenhof with at least one, usually two vaccinations; your veterinary practice takes over the following appointments.
Chip, passport, registration
The microchip is implanted under the skin of the neck in week 7 or 8 — one prick, no anaesthetic. The 15-digit number is recorded in the EU pet passport.
After the move, register the chip free of charge with Tasso or Findefix in your name and update the data whenever you move house.
Travelling within the EU
For travel: a valid rabies vaccination, at twelve weeks earliest, effective 21 days after the injection. A dog younger than 15 weeks therefore may not cross the border.
The pet passport must contain chip number, vaccine label, date and the vet's signature — check this before departure.
Frequently asked questions
May the puppy go out before the last vaccination?
Yes, and it should. Avoid dog meadows and soiled spots, but use the socialisation window up to week 16 — carried in your arms, in the car, on quiet streets.
